Astrid Schmulian from the Department of Accounting received the Best Junior Researcher in Financial Sciences 2017 award, which recognises achievers in the field of research who contribute towards the University's strategic goals of achieving academic excellence, international competitiveness and local relevance as measured by the quality of their research. Accounting Rookies spent the day sharing their ideas on accounting teaching and learning research with students on the Tukkies PhD and Masters programme. We look forward to collaborating with these evidence-based teachers in future!
IFRS Rookies presented their teaching toolkit and collaborative assessment with colleagues at the University of the Witwatersrand. The UKZN Teaching and Learning Office (UTLO) hosted it's annual dinner at which UKZN's Distinguished Teachers (DTAs) are honoured. At this function IFRS Rookies was honoured as recipient/s of the CHE/HELTASA Teaching Excellence award and invited as guests of honour and keynote speakers. Speech Abstract: Societal pressures to redress past imbalances, increase student throughput rates, and ensure students finish within the minimum time because of the significant cost of higher education, has led faculty and policymakers to search for innovative ways to improve student outcomes. Traditionally, solutions have focused on instructors as human capital and increasing their qualification levels. However, research suggests that such policies result in marginal changes in student outcomes. It has been suggested that focusing on teachers as social capital, may be far more effective at improving student outcomes. What happens when you combine human and social capital? What if teachers are good at their jobs and also talk to one another frankly and on a regular basis about what they do in class and engage with each other and the students in the class? If human capital is strong, individual teachers should have the knowledge and skills to do a good job in their own classrooms. But if social capital is also strong, teachers can continually learn from their conversations with one another and become even better at what they do. In this presentation we will share our thoughts on the above and how we are responding in our teaching and learning. Team Teaching Rookies had the pleasure of sharing their thoughts on the value of teachers as social capital by presenting a workshop on team teaching at the University of KwaZulu Natal.
Prof Elsabé Loots, Dean of the Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences, hosted top academic achievers in the Faculty at the prestigious annual Dean’s List Awards function on 16 May 2017.
21 Master’s students who achieved a GPA of 75% or above and completed their degrees in the minimum prescribed time received awards making up 11% of the total 192 graduates. Two of these students were supervised by IFRS Rookies. Well done Maryke and Marina! Prof Stephen Coetzee from the Department of Accounting received the Exceptional Young Researcher Award, which recognises achievers in the field of research who contribute towards the University's strategic goals of achieving academic excellence, international competitiveness and local relevance. According to him, 'an award is never ever just about the person that receives it. To think that would be arrogant in the extreme. Awards are the culmination of many stars aligning and others playing a significant role in the journey. It is always hard to be the one singled out, because there are others who have contributed massively and should be on the podium with you. I am really proud of the Department of Accounting for the achievements, both seen and unseen, in teaching and research these past few years. There is an abundance of wonderfully talented people in the Department.'
